My all-time favorite book EVER.

Yes, it is a bit tough of a read-- jumping from flashback to flashback. In the first five chapters, there is only 1 comma used. (During my reread, I'm counting commas).

Yes, there is some violence, and sexual content. but honestly, it's a novel about war and the reality of its outcomes sometimes. Obviously, that stuff is going to be apparent.
In no way is it sugar-coated.

As a past Linguistics minor, I am in complete love with this book (not for the lack of commas, but that adds to it). Instead, for the pure imagery and way of writing.

Please do give it a shot. It is so worth a read. Get through it once, THEN make your overall decision about it. Do NOT sell this book short.

I can't believe I had never read this book bore now. I completely understand how it became the anthem during Vietnam. It's so depressing, rupturing and rapturing , uplifting, spirited, grotesque and spellbinding, it will make anyone think twice about war. Maybe three or four times. I don't review that many books, and I read a lot of them. This one has left me stunned.
I have read this once before in Junior High and that was after the Vietnam War . Well, several years afterwards . I remember that my best friends Daddy had been in Vietnam . We were in Elementary school and it was all really foreign to us. In grade school , my parents had this tradition of our family watching the CBS evening news each night after dinner . I can remember being so young and seeing the battles . The scenes were so shocking and I asked questions but I did not really get direct explanations for the fighting . It was as though my Mom did not really understand and my Daddy was always working on call or overtime in the Air Force . I knew he would explain but he was always sleeping . No one would say anything except we should not be there. Then my best friend said her Daddy had been sick from Agent Orange gas . Her Mother had her brother after this and it was bad for him .
I also remember we all bought cuff bracelets with the names of POWs and MIAs and would wear them until they were returned home. My bracelet was so worn down and split in half . I could not wear it any more . I never heard from my POW .
When I read this book back then , it was so sad and enough to make me really hate war.
When I recently returned to these pages , it reminded me of my innocence. War is not really about people unless it is over a genocide or holocost or saving or preserving freedom . War always seems to be about the greed or power of governments above people . The people who are are poor and fight are the ones who are injured and suffer. Yet , we don't complain because we are proud and convinced we are fighting for our good . This book should be required reading in every school and by every recruit before entering the service.
The first time I read this book I was deeply affected by it -- to simply say that it's an antiwar novel is not enough. Its the story of a young soldier - faceless, limbless and without most of his senses having been caught in an shell blast but whose mind is sound. The story for me was more about the gap between expectation and reality. It's a thought-provoking look at so many things, not the least of which is the horrors of war and it's consequences, euthanasia, hope and despair . Highly recommended you read the book, the movie production which became a cult classic was directed by it's author -- might have been better handled by a more capable director but it's still worth a look.
This book came into my life at a time that I needed a bit of fear. I was browsing a forum with a title like Books that will make you cry. I was feeling aimless and depressed. There was little meaning in my life, so I decided to plunge deeper into my sadness to see if I could find a bottom.

This book is not my bottom. Instead, it shows what a bottom could actually look like. As I've read this (it took me awhile to finish. This book hurts to read), I've noticed my appreciation for little things again. My value for life and people has grown, but also my self appreciation.

If you, or anyone you can speak to, feels like nothing matters, then you are one of the problems this book shines a light on.

I will need to remember this book, daily. Life is important and disregard for it is worse than death.
This is the best WWI novel I have read. It makes Siegfried Sassoon's books read like nursery rhymes. It is also the best war novel I have read too. This is close to the best viscerally written piece I have read. So much venom, anxiety, fear, loneliness, longing, sentiment. Impossible not to be unmoved. Very powerful emotional. And to achieve this, is some of the most rich, robust, courageous, clear writing I have read. Just no holding back. The most powerful anti-war novel and memoir I have read. Also, I listened to the Audible performance while reading. It was a dramatic feat, that brought the story and character acutely to the surface. The best performance I have heard, and I will say a necessary component to a real appreciation of this very powerful novel.
This book is one of my absolute favorites. Powerful, thought provoking, horrific, unforgettable. I first read this book decades ago and was blown away. I used to pick it up and re-read it every time I started feeling sorry for myself to put things in perspective. As you go through his experience in a French wartime hospital, you follow him on his horrifying journey of discovering one item at a time of just how immense his injuries were - and then how he found a way to compensate for all his loses. I lent my copy - a first edition hardback - to someone years ago and have not seen it since. So I am ordering the e-book version so I can one more time read this incredible book again. This should be a must read for every young person contemplating a career in the military. Matter of fact, I will extend that to every entitled person out there who whines about what they don't have. Sobering.....
