The Long Journey to Sincerity Elana Mayne Jason Ellis 9781906529529 Books

I love conspiracy theories so a book that can bring them to life is not only interesting to read, it unnerves you to the point of fearing that this could come true. Fear, control, manipulation, conformity are all tools that a Government gone wrong will seek to instill or use to keep the community in line and them in power. We are here to keep you safe... but from whom is the question you will ask yourself. Twists abound from beginning to end which kept me on my toes and so engrossed in the story that I read the entire book in one sitting!

Elana Mayne, a conforming 16 year old member of her community, is on her way to finding out what her future will hold for a job.
Little does she know that her appointment will change her life forever. Drama and mystery abound as we follow the roller coaster ride of Elana's life were everything that she ever knew and thought to be true ends up being a lie. With the help of an unlikely set of twins, secrets are revealed and Elana sets out to get the man who took her life away.

Really I am not sure who was held more captive, Elana or myself as I read the book. I can't wait until the next book comes out!! Great YA book reminiscent of Hunger Games with a touch of Vendetta.. it was awesome!

The Long Journey to Sincerity Elana Mayne Jason Ellis 9781906529529 Books Reviews

When I began this book, I was immediately reminded of George Orwell's book, 1984. While there are some initial similarities, I'm happy to say this book its own path fairly quickly. The story is set in an undefined time in the future after a virus has run rampant through the world. Now people live in fenced in communities, their lives restricted by the government in control of their piece of the world. Everything they do is regulated by the government - where they go to school, what they study, what they can wear, what job they hold, where they can travel.

Someone has orchestrated an accident on a train platform where Elana ends up with a broken arm. Afterwards, Elana finds a note in her pocket predicting certain events will happen that Elana finds every disturbing. After one such event, she goes to visit her friend, Blake. His father is in the hospital, injured in a mine explosion. During her visit, the community guard show up and Blake hides her under the living room floor. To her horror, Elana witnesses Blake's murder by none other than the man in charge of the zone in which she and her family live, Mayor Hartner.

Waiting until she believes it's safe to come out of hiding, Elana heads home. Unfortunately, she's unaware she was caught on hidden camera coming out from her hiding place. Elana is taken captive by the community guards where she comes face to face with the mayor. All she knows now is that she is considered a risk to the public and her parents have been relocated at their request.

This is a story both about absolute power corrupting absolutely, and the determination of a few to set things right for everyone. 1984 was a world where everyone was programmed or conditioned to behave in a particular way. Independent thought was not allowed. These two books have that much in common with each other. In 1984, two people fall in love, are found out and torn apart by the people in power. Ellis' book is not about a love found and destroyed by a government. Here we have an underground group determined to bring the truth to light and change things.

Truths and secrets are revealed in the course of this book. I kept hoping to see a love develop between Elana and her rescuer. The author is wiser than I; there was no romance. There is however, a surprise that I could not have imagined at the end, one that leaves the story open for a second book if the author chooses. Although I'm of a mixed mind on that.

Read the book. Then sit back and think about the ending. Perhaps, just perhaps, this is where the story should end, without a sequel. We are left in a place in our own minds to write where we want the story to go. After all, can an author really ask for anything more than their work stay with us? That their words make us think or imagine... what if?

This book really wasn't my 'cup of tea' if you will. It didn't captivate me and hold me from start to finish. However, it did make me think. My thoughts circled around from this story to events taking place around the world. The story is very well written. There is a depth to the characters that shows the author's attention to detail. I was gifted a copy of this book by the author in exchange for an honest review.

The Long Journey To Sincerity
The Story of Elana Mayne #1

Whilst reading this book I was starting to question my sanity! It’s a great read, and I loved it from start to finish, but the author sure has a way of throwing in the twists until you’ve forgotten all your questions and it’s taken you down a completely different path. I’m sure extra twists have been added, just for the readers enjoyment (or torment), and they make the book – you have no idea what is going to happen or what’s in store next. I hate books that are predictable and this story couldn’t be further from that if it tried.

Elana is a character of circumstance, but she is a survivor and no one could doubt her determination and strength as she tries to come to terms with everything she knows being a lie. I’m sure I would have just curled up and cried if I was her.

More of Jackson would be good (my mind is already imagining numerous ways this could work with the story) and I’m intrigued to see where things lead with Brin (I’m sure the author will find a way to twist this as well). This book came to a natural end, but didn’t finish and there are still unanswered questions, which I’m looking forward to being answered.

I was provided with an e-copy from the author in exchange for an honest review.
Loved it, every turn was another surprise. It isn't your typical dystopian book...it's filled with so many government conspiracies that will have you in shock.I couldn't help but sympathize with poor Elana, she was put through the ringer. Just when you think you have it all figured out turn the page. It will have you sitting on the edge of your seat biting your nails. This is one you will surely want to add to your library.
This is not at all what I was expecting from this author. Im a big fan of his works, they bring out your inner child. This book however is for teens and older. Elana lives in a world that is ruled by mayors, to keep residents inside safe zones. You quickly fall into this world and feel if you are living it with the characters. I think anyone will enjoy this story, it has crime, murder and brain washing but also has hope, love and true friendships. Great read!
