The Lives of Christopher Chant A Chrestomanci Book Diana Wynne Jones 9780688163655 Books
I've always loved Diana Wynne Jones. Started out as a child with Howl's Moving Castle (before seeing the Ghibli adaption) and moved to the Chrestomanci Chronicles after. I actually read the Chrestmanci books out of order, but the books are all laid out well enough to stand on their own. Obviously the characters are a bit richer with their full background, but it speaks to how well the author can introduce here new characters and settings.I think this is my second favorite of the series after "The Magicians of Caprona"
I happily recommend this series to any of middle school age who like magic and fantasy.

Feels like a slow start, but by chapter 3 it starts getting interesting
LOVE! Have read this series over and over again. Can't get enough.
An original and entertaining read. Full of fanciful characters. Makes you want to do magic. I am an adult who sought out light reading.
I have read almost all of Diana Wynne Jones' books by now, and this is one of my absolute favorites alongside Howl's Magic Castle. I'm gutted that she wont be delighting us with anymore tales of magic and mischief, but I'm sure she has fun in whatever of the worlds she has gone to.
"The Lives of Christopher Chant" has a wonderful complex plot which is rare in children's books. A lovely read with a lot of characters you remember fondly even after you finished the book. Throgmorten is a special favorite of mine.
I read this with my 8 year old son and we both loved it. It is loaded with intrigue and action. If he had been reading it on his own, some of the vocabulary words might have been tough for him. But reading it on the kindle, every time we came to a difficult word, it became a teaching moment, as I pulled up the definition right away. Now he wants to read all of the Chrestomanci books.
Diana Wynne Jones is simply one the very best fantasy writers out there. If you like fantasy, then you need to read her books.
And then someone should riff with me about them, because I need more people to chat about Chrestomanci with. Mostly because her books ARE SO UNDERAPPRECIATED.
Also, if anyone has the link to the original cover for the joint Charmed life and Lives of Christopher Chant Chronicles of Chrestomanci vo. 1 with Throgmorton on the cover in all brown and orange, Put it in a comment. Mine was stolen and now I just have three paper back copies of the black covers. The first one was so much more appealing but I can't find it anywhere.
I'm talking how the book version by the way, not the kindle version, which I think is what I'm writing a review for but I'm not 100% on that.
Diana Wynne Jones is one of my favourite authors of books for children and teens. Her imagination knew no bounds and she mixed fantastic creativity with hilarity. Her series of books about the Chrestomanci, a nine-lived enchanter who lives in a world parallel to ours, is one of her best works.
This book could be considered the first in the series although it is not listed as such. It is about a young boy who is destined to grow to be the Chrestomanci, the enchanter who must regulate all the magic and its users in the twelve series of parallel worlds. He must have nine lives and only someone who has no duplicates or doppelgangers in all of the worlds can have nine lives, a very, very rare person indeed.
Christpher Chant does not want to be the Chrestomanci and how he comes to terms with his destiny makes a wonderful, exciting story. I hope you buy this book and its companions for your child, your best friends and, most of all, for yourself because these books are written for all ages and I know you will enjoy them. They are especially good for reading aloud.
The next book to read in this series would be Conrad's Fate which happens about three years after The Lives of Christopher Chant. Happy reading!
