This is the first of Mr. Lem's books I've read, and I got to say it was AWESOME.

I've been thinking and I'm quite sure there's two types of authors: those who love to TELL a story, and those who are actually in love with the LANGUAGE and the WORDS that tell their story. Mr. Lem is according to my totally random taxonomy of authors, one of the latter.

The book is by itself, a funny collection of stories: some of them are good, others are great. But it is not in the narration of the stories that The Cyberiad shines: it’s in the unquestionable love about the language (the original is in Polish, I read a fantastic English translation) and the way it can wrap a story: "cover it in sweet chocolate", so to speak.

The high point of the book is "The Tale of the Three Storytelling Machines". Its a great tale and really shines with Mr. Lem's way of telling the stories. And yes, this is the one that has the "matryoshka doll" vibe, like in One Thousand and One Nights.

But for me, the absolute best tale, with one of the most amazing fragments I've read in my whole life is "Trurl's Electronic Bard". You REALLY have to read the second poem, the one that is supposed to be "about a haircut, but lofty, noble, tragic, timeless, full of love, treachery, retribution, and quiet heroism in the face of certain doom!". Amazing. This paragraph, along with the absolutely great poem is something the whole humanity should read.

I will definitely read his other work, if it is as good and heartfelt as this one, then I look forward to visit Mr. Lem's “chocolate covered” universe.

Whether your nerdiness lies in math, computer science, or Eastern European socio-politcal humour, you will enjoy this collection. Also makes for great conversation at parties where craft beer and organic tea are served.
Made me laugh out loud in some places, think really hard in others and both in many. It's great to read an author who can work very deep and complex ideas and questions into their work in such an enjoyable fashion. For example (spoiler alert) when one of the robots travels to the planet of the robots of the 'Highest Possible Level of Development' and they refuse to respond to his questions he builds a machine to model the 'Highest Possible Level of Development' robots exactly except for being more willing to communicate so he can question one of the modelled robots instead. This was almost Godel, Escher, Bachian in the loops it provoked in my brain, and equally very funny because of the responses he received to his questions.
This isn't the first edition - but otherwise it's a classic work of science fiction, philosophy and humor. Not for nothing was Stanisław Lem nominated for a Nobel Prize in Literature. I teach this book in classes from time to time, and every time a student will say "Why didn't I know about this book before!?" Michael Kandel is a brilliant translator; his version of the love poem in the language of higher mathematics is worth, all on its own, the price of admission.

The process of ordering this copy as a gift revealed that the book is now out of print. This is terrible news - but if you need a copy, buy it now before used copies climb in price!
I first read this book many years ago and greatly enjoyed it. It is a five star book. This audio version performed by Alello wasn't so great. At times I found the narrator's voice rather annoying. When changing voices for different characters it sometimes sounded rather childish. The quality of the narration varied greatly from one story to the next. The best ones were performed when little or no effort was made to change voice.
If someone is interested in reading some of Lem's shorter works The Cyberiad is a fabulous book. Think of it as the Arabian knights going philosophical. Lem was one of the greatest Science Fiction writers ever. He should have been mainstream.
Clever, witty, intensely creative and original, packed full of plot lines and surprises that will keep the reader turning the pages late into the night. There are not many sci fi books which also demonstrate a brilliant and imaginative sense of humor which is woven into the fabric of the stories and makes them a pleasure to read. You will not go wrong with either this or The Star Diaries, by the same author.
Cyberiad is a masterwork of satiric fiction. First published in Polish, then published in English in 1974, it seems almost certain Douglas Adams read it and was influenced in writing Hitch Hiker's Guide. The book is a series of stories exploring various philosophical concepts such as the meaning of sentience, whether there is free will, and what is the purpose life. This all sounds dry and boring, but that is because I lack the genius of Stanislaw Lem (and his translator, Michael Kandel). The stories are hilarious and the wordplay is so clever you will wonder how it could possibly be a translation.
